Today June 4th I had the honor of going with the Mountain View Elementary Student Council to For the Troops in Simi Valley.
For the Troops is an organization that puts together care packages for the men and women serving our country. They send out about 250 care packages a month to both soldiers stationed over seas and here in the USA.
For the Troops run solely on donations from people of the community as well as volunteers who run the "location" and assemble the packages. Every package has items such as DVD's, toothbrushes, oatmeal and girl scout cookies....plus a hand drawn picture with a letter from a child or a card from an adult.
We all had the chance to write a short letter and draw a photo for the soldier receiving our boxes that we made today. This was such a great volunteer opportunity for the student council, they all really enjoyed their time there and decided they would be back over the summer to volunteer.
For the Troops is open Mon-Thurs and Saturday, anyone can donate or volunteer there time, all you have to do is show up at the location and they put you to work!! So rewarding knowing that assembling the care packages as well as writing letters means the world to the soldiers.
Can't wait to bring the rest of the titleholders there to volunteer over the summer!!
Thank you very much to the sweet volunteer Toni who showed us around the facility and allowed us to come volunteer!!
